East Oxford Latin project - volunteer students needed

The Iris Project and the Oxford University Classics Outreach Programme are looking for enthusiastic and committed student volunteers to spend an hour a week during university terms in East Oxford primary schools running Latin sessions from October 2010 until June 2011.

Students will be following a series of lesson plans which use games, storytelling and activities to introduce Latin and Classical civilisation to groups of year five and six children (ages 9-11) - an outline of the lesson plans can be found here (http://www.irismagazine.org/course_introduction.html).

Training and support will be provided by project leaders throughout the year, as well as the opportunity to meet regularly with students involved and discuss teaching ideas and resources.

Helping in local schools is a rewarding and enriching experience, and can make a profound difference to the lives of young children. If you would like to apply for this scheme, please email a covering letter and CV to:

Dr Lorna Robinson on editor@irismagazine.org

Interviews will take place in the Oxford University Classics Centre during eighth week.

We believe that all children are entitled to the opportunity of learning about the languages and cultures of the ancient world, and that these subjects are wonderful tools for enhancing literacy, social awareness and analytical skills. Through a range of initiatives in UK state schools, we work to enrich the curriculum by promoting learning about the ancient world.
