UCL Funding for Latin project

University College London's Widening Participation Committee have awarded a grant for Iris' London Latin project. Their money will fund UCL Classics students to teach in state primary schools in inner London boroughs, delivering Latin on the literacy time table and as after school classes to hundreds of children who would not otherwise have the opportunity to learn these subjects.

Research conducted by The Iris Project and other organisations demonstrates that Latin enhances literacy and linguistic skills at key stage two level, as well as developing a range of other skills and increasing confidence.

The money will also fund training for the students at the Classics PGCE Department at King's College London Department of Education, enabling students to develop their teaching skills and gain professional teacher-training. For more information on this project please visit our 'literacy through Latin' page.

We believe that all children are entitled to the opportunity of learning about the languages and cultures of the ancient world, and that these subjects are wonderful tools for enhancing literacy, social awareness and analytical skills. Through a range of initiatives in UK state schools, we work to enrich the curriculum by promoting learning about the ancient world.
